Reinventing the Genre

Today’s stirring update is the first of a two part series that will close up last week’s discussion and answer our fans most asked question; “What is Outland 17’s gameplay going to be like?”

Last week you read about the challenge of making math tell a story. The road less taken was an open ended Google Chat discussion with the entire Outland 17 team to crack open and conquer the Pandora’s box of gameplay questions.

What can be done to bring a fresh take to fans of the turn based genre?

The original turn based experience was based around a sci-fi setting with historical undertones to the themes and character development.

Many meetings later this early concept art was born of thought, mind, sci-fi and gameplay.

The design goal shifted from having players rush to hit “end turn” to every action and moment between each turn to feel completely immersed into the story and environment. Outland 17 is less about getting from turn A to turn B, and more about the experience players have along the way.

Players will find themselves battling for their lives in dark allies. Waging all-out war on an open field of battle against armed battalions marching to hold the line against you. Or rushing through a spaceport to escape a deadly ambush.

And each new step in the journey will present you with unique challenges, and tools to solve those challenges.

Till next time, thanks for tuning in Internet and see you next time.
